3rd-6th Graders

Embark on an outdoor adventure with canoeing, hiking, sailing, and campfire s’mores– or turn your home into a laboratory while you learn to build cool inventions. Inside or out, kiss summer boredom goodbye!

 
 
  • Cool Experiences:
    June 14 – August 6

    Get into nature and change the world! Participants in this Monday-Friday day camp will explore the ecological importance of Lake Michigan plus the natural habitats of Lake County while gaining important knowledge on the health of the earth and where our food comes from. Fit Fridays include tennis, lacrosse, plus fun at Waukegan Beach.

  • iBIO STEM Family Camp:
    June 21 – June 25

    Designed for the whole family to enjoy, iBIO’s hands-on experiments make it easy to stay engaged and keep learning during summertime. Supplies are included, and there’s an opportunity to connect online with a community of co-campers from across the country. Summer Up with science!

 

 

7th-8th Graders

Yes, it IS possible to have fun and flex your brain muscle, too… indoors or out, summer is for exploration! Get in touch with nature or mix it up with chemistry, art, or other creative adventures!

 
 
  • Chicago Voyagers:
    June 1 - August 13

    Get up, get out, and explore! One day per week for the first four weeks, you’ll join Chicago Voyagers to learn new skills while gearing up for an exciting 3-day overnight backpacking trip to Manistee National Forest in Michigan at the end of June. Every week through August 13th is a different experience, so you’ll learn skills and something new every time out! Canoe, hike and sail your way through a summer you’ll want to blog about!

    College of Lake County is giving 7-8th graders something new to learn and discover each and every week! From math and chemistry, to creative writing, art, and filmmaking– there’s a favorite subject for you to explore among the fourteen available morning or afternoon workshops.

  • iBIO STEM Family Camp

Choose an in-person or virtual experience that’ll look great on your resumé and make your summer something to remember and brag about! All Summer Up experiences are free to qualifying participants, and transportation for on-campus programs is provided.

 
 
  • Chicago Voyagers:
    June 2 – August 21

    Chicago Voyagers is back with their one-day canoeing, hiking and sailing adventures– but hold on! This camp includes a two-day overnight rock climbing clinic, and from August 7-14 you’ll be hitting the road for hiking and camping in the incredible Rocky Mountains! Sleep under the stars! Be one with nature! You’ll be with experienced guides who know exactly how to make the trip fun for those who love the outdoors, and those who’ve never set foot on a hiking trail, too. Gear up for a fun challenge you’ll be bragging about to everyone!

    Choose from an amazing twenty-two workshops designed to inspire and give teens a lasting impression of careers, including: culinary and creative arts, criminal justice, medicine, and automative tech. Choose from mornings or afternoons, online or socially-distanced in-person experiences.

    Big Idea Classroom: Intro to Entrepreneurship
    July 13 – August 17

    Build confidence in your ideas, learn how to communicate business concepts, and master your pitch to investors– just like they do on Shark Tank! In just two hours per week online, you’ll discover your true entrepreneurial spirit while developing a concept for your own business– and even have the opportunity to earn college credits from University of Iowa.

    DePaul University College Connect
    For Rising 11-12th graders
    June 28 – July 30

    This popular program from DePaul University allows students to gain career insights and get an introduction to college-level coursework in one of six fields of study: sociology, digital animation, journalism, advertising, film & television, and business. Early application is crucial and requires a written personal statement to be accepted. Application Deadline: April 15th

  • ONLINE
    Augustana College College Experience
    For Rising 11-12th graders
    July 12 – August 13

    Choose from five new online programs taught by esteemed Augustana instructors– designed to make the online experience fun! Explore Afrofuturism in storytelling, or gain perspective on current times by learning about “Plagues and Poxes.” Learn about how humans survive using logic and sheer survival techniques, or take a walk through science fiction in movies. There’s something for everyone!

 

 

Internships

For Students 16 years old and up:
Summer Up! offers paid internships in some of the North Chicago’s leading organizations. Gain experience in public service, social assistance, culinary services, and more! 

 
 
  • The city of North Chicago is proud to host Summer Up! 2021 internships in a number of city departments, including Fire, Public Finance, and Human Resources. A selection of this year’s interns will work in community outreach; creating and distributing care packages as part of North Chicago’s Covid-19 Response Team.

    City of North Chicago internships are a terrific opportunity to learn the daily operations of city government while serving and supporting the whole North Chicago community.

  • Community Action Partnership of Lake County provides resources to help families move toward self-sufficiency. This year’s CAP interns will participate in two concentrations; as administrative support to the CAP management and leadership team, and in the Cap Catering/Culinary Arts division. Applicants should be self-starters who share CAP’s dedication to helping people help themselves.

    Bi-lingual applicants are highly encouraged to apply.

  • Get paid while making a real difference in the lives of others! Cool Ministries provides comprehensive assistance to families in need; reducing hunger and homelessness while encouraging personal growth and self-sufficiency.

    Cool Ministries is in need of able-bodied interns to help in its food pantry– distributing food to visitors and assisting with data entry. Applicants must be able to lift 20 pounds.

  • YouthBuild provides young people of North Chicago development and training opportunities though construction of homes for low income families, and community service work that supports parks and open land spaces, children, veterans, and seniors.

    YouthBuild is seeking a High School graduate or college undergrad to assist the Member Services department with recruitment, record keeping, and outreach. This 20-30hr/week internship is an amazing opportunity for an applicant with very good organizational, typing, and computer skills, and the ability to maintain a professional demeanor in a fast-paced environment!
